Gary Holmes Obituary
Gary David Holmes passed away on Tuesday, April 7, 2026 at home surrounded by his loving family. He fought a courageous battle against cancer for 12 years. He was 78 years old. Born in Sioux Falls, South Dakota on February 23, 1948, to Norman Woodrow and Vivian Rosenwald Holmes. At the age of 10 moved to Greenville, Mississippi with his family. Gary thrived in Greenville as he loved living in the South . After graduation from Greenville High School Gary attended Mississippi State University, where he earned a bachelor's degree in human resource management. 31 years of his professional career was devoted to the Grand Gulf Nuclear Power Plant. Upon retirement, Gary worked as an independent contractor in procurement engineering well into his 70s. During his retirement, Gary focused on family, family gatherings, and improving upon his favorite pastime golf. A devoted member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints for 50 years. He held numerous callings in the church throughout the years, his favorite one being scoutmaster.
He is preceded in death by his parents and brother Jeffrey Holmes.
He is survived by his loving wife of 49 years, Judy Holmes; sons, Joseph David Holmes (Marsha) of Gastonia, North Carolina, Kevin Douglas Holmes of Austin, Texas and Kevin Scott Goodin (Brandy) of Florence, Mississippi; daughter, Tanya Goodin Daugherty (Alan) of Boca Raton, Florida , grandchildren, Kaley Grace Ray (Logan) of Newnan, Georgia and Sarah Lindsey Goodin of Ocean Springs, Mississippi; also the extended Cumberland family.
Pallbearers will be Kevin Goodin, Kirk Cumberland, Alan Daugherty, Joey Holmes, Kevin Holmes, and Dwight Pikes. Honorary pallbearers will be Edgar Thompson and Seth Daugherty.
The family would like to give a special thanks to Maria Cabanillas, MD of MD Anderson, Houston, Texas, Elizabeth Herrington, MD Jackson Oncology Associates, Hillary Daugherty, MD, Chief Fellow for Oncology and Hematology at The University of Mississippi Medical Center, Jackson, Mississippi, Gentiva Hospice and Rita Adams, RN.
A funeral service will be held at Glenwood Funeral Home on Friday, April 10, 2026, at 10:00 a.m. Visitation will be one hour before the service. A graveside service will be at Bond Baptist Church Cemetery in Philadelphia, Mississippi at 2:00 p.m.

Sorry to hear about Gary's passing. Gary was a good High School Friend & MSU college roommate.We had many good times during those years, & I'll always remember his Chevy Corvair that we road the streets of Greenville while hanging out at Strazi's and cruising to and riding the Levee and back to Strazi's many many times.

What a great guy, Gary Holmes, was. He was one of my favorite folks at GHS, quiet, but always friendly. The world will be a little less bright without Gary's handsome face in it. RIP, dear friend.
