Joan died on December 28, 2009, at home after battling lung and bone cancer.  She was diagnosed the year before with stage 4 cancer.  Joan lived north of Nashville, TN.  She and I grew up together,  attending the same church and schools. We had reconnected with each other the year before she was diagnosed.  I miss her.....RIP Joan!

Joan and I were in section 8-E, at Bass Junior High, school year 1961-1962; it was a fun and vivacious group of classmates.  In 1961, in Mrs. Cason's 4th period history class, Joan gave a stand-up synopsis of the Berlin Crisis, which involved the ongoing (at the time) construction of the Berlin Wall.  Joan had a way of pronouncing the letter "s" that made a slight hiss sound, and, during the speech, she was describing East Berlin and West Berlin, and pronouncing those 2 city names numerous times.  I don't remember much about the speech, except for the hissing "s" sounds of East Berlin and West Berlin, from Joan's verbal utterances.  It's strange the perceptions that stick in our minds.  To this day, when any mention is made of the Berlin Wall, I flash back to that 4th period history class speech, and Joan's hissing pronunciation of East Berlin and West Berlin.  I remember Joan as a studious classmate and a sweet lady. --Dan Drew, Walnut Creek California, GHS1966
